Almost every answer to this question online is a list of products, which is the one thing that cannot help you, because a product ranking is only as honest as whoever compiled it. What you actually need is a set of criteria you can apply yourself, to any machine, in any showroom, including ours.
There are five that matter, and they are not the five that get advertised. What each stage is and how much medium it contains. How fast it can deliver while still working properly. Whether it has been tested by somebody independent, against a named standard, as a whole system. Whether the cartridges are a size you will still be able to buy in three years. And — the one nobody weighs at purchase and everybody feels afterwards — whether anyone will actually turn up to service it. Below is how to judge each, including the places where the honest answer does not flatter us.
Stage count is the most misleading number in the category
Filters are sold on stages the way televisions are sold on inches, and the comparison breaks down immediately. A stage is simply a housing with something in it. Nothing in the number tells you what that something is, or how much of it there is.
A seven-stage machine can be seven small cartridges in seven small housings, several of them doing near-identical work, one of them a scented block whose only function is to make the water taste faintly of something. A four-stage machine can be a proper sediment cartridge, a generously sized carbon block, a second carbon stage and a fine post-filter, each with several times the medium of the seven-stage unit’s equivalents. The four-stage machine performs better and will keep performing longer.
Two stages genuinely earn their place in almost any system: something to catch particles before they blind the expensive cartridge, and carbon in enough quantity to hold chlorine and organic compounds for the whole service interval. A reverse osmosis membrane earns its place where the water calls for one. Beyond that, ask what the extra stages do, and treat “mineral cartridge” and “energy stage” with the scepticism they have earned.
Media volume and contact time — the thing that actually decides performance
This is the number nobody prints on the box, and it is the one that governs whether a filter works.
Carbon removes chlorine by contact. Water has to spend enough time touching enough carbon for the molecules to be captured. Push water quickly through a thin cartridge and a proportion of it exits having barely met the medium at all. The filter has not failed dramatically; it has just done less than the label implies, and it does progressively less as the carbon fills up.
So a physically larger cartridge, with more medium and a longer path through it, does more per litre and lasts longer before it saturates. This is unglamorous engineering, it costs more to make, and it is invisible on a specification sheet. When comparing two machines, pick up the cartridges. A carbon block that feels substantial in the hand is doing more work than one you could mistake for a marker pen, and the difference is not marketing.
Flow rate, and what is realistic
A filtered tap will never gush like your kitchen mixer, and any dealer promising it will is either selling something with almost nothing in it or has not tried it. Narrower tubing and a path through media both cost flow. That is the trade.
What is reasonable is this. A well-built carbon and sediment system fills a kettle at a rate you would not think about — noticeably slower than the mixer, fast enough that you do not stand there. A reverse osmosis system is different in kind: the membrane produces slowly, so the unit stores what it makes in a small pressurised tank and serves you from that, running well until the tank empties and then trickling while it refills.

How to read a certification, and what one is worth
You cannot see, taste or verify what a filter has removed. That is the whole problem with this category, and independent testing is the only evidence that exists. It is also the claim most routinely blurred.
A meaningful certificate names three things: a specific model, a specific standard, and the laboratory that did the work, with a date. It says this machine was tested against this benchmark and met it. Anything vaguer is decoration.
Three blurs to watch for. First, a certificate for a component is not a certificate for the system — a membrane or a housing may be certified by its own manufacturer’s testing while the finished machine it was built into has never been tested at all. Second, a company-level standard is not a product test; a management-system certificate says something real about how a business runs, and nothing whatever about how well its filter removes chlorine. Third, a badge on a website with no model, no standard and no laboratory behind it is a graphic, and treating it as evidence is exactly what it was designed for.
The practical check takes two minutes: ask which model the certificate covers, ask which standard it was tested to, and then look up the laboratory named on it. A firm that holds real documents will send them without hesitation. Ours are published rather than described, on our certifications page.
Build and serviceability — the criterion that shows up in year three
Everything above concerns how a filter performs when new. This one concerns whether it is still a good machine after three years, and it is where a lot of cheap equipment quietly fails.
The question to ask is blunt: are the cartridges a standard size, or a proprietary shape only this company sells? Standard housings have been made to common dimensions for decades. Cartridges for them are available from many sources, competitively priced, and will still exist long after any individual dealer has moved on. A proprietary cartridge — a bayonet fitting, a chipped module, a shape that fits nothing else — means the machine is only as available as the company that sold it, and its consumable price is only as reasonable as that company chooses to keep it.
Alongside that: are the fittings the standard push-fit type any technician can work with, and can a cartridge be changed without dismantling the cabinet. None of this affects how the water tastes on day one. All of it decides what owning the thing is like.
The criterion almost nobody weighs: will anyone service it
Here is the part that gets left out of every comparison, and it matters more than anything above.
A water filter is a subscription to a service relationship, whether or not it is sold to you as one. The machine has consumables. They exhaust on a schedule set by how much water you use and how warm your supply runs. If nobody replaces them, the equipment does not simply stop working — it gets worse than useless. A saturated carbon cartridge stops holding what it captured and becomes a warm, damp, organically loaded object with your drinking water passing through it. That is the honest reason a neglected filter is worse than no filter, and it is set out at length in what happens if you never change the cartridge.
So the question to put to any seller, before price, is operational: do you employ your own technicians or subcontract them; how do you know when my cartridges are due; what happens if I do not answer the phone; how long have you been servicing in this country; and can I speak to someone if something leaks on a Friday. A firm with an ordinary answer to those is worth more than a firm with an extra stage. Sales tactics worth walking away from
Some of these are common enough locally to be worth naming.
- The demonstration where your water turns brown. A device with two metal electrodes is dropped into a glass, and within a minute the water is a murky orange while the filtered sample stays clear. What you are watching is the iron electrode corroding and its rust dispersing through the water. It happens readily in water carrying dissolved solids and barely at all in water that carries almost none — so the test measures conductivity and stages a colour change. It shows you nothing about safety.
- A handheld meter waved over your tap. These read total dissolved solids, which is a real measurement of one narrow property and not a verdict on quality. - A price that expires today. Filtration equipment is not perishable. A discount that disappears if you ask for a night to think is a device for preventing you from comparing.
- Anyone who claims to have analysed your supply on the doorstep. Meaningful analysis is laboratory work with sampling protocols. We do not do it either — we sell and service filters, and the honest route to knowing what is in your supply is your emirate’s water authority, which publishes it.
Putting it together
Judge the cartridges rather than the stage count. Ask what each stage is and how much medium it holds. Expect a filtered tap to be slower than a mixer. Ask which model a certificate covers, which standard, and which laboratory. Check the cartridges are a size you can still buy in three years. And weigh the service relationship as heavily as the hardware, because that is the part you will live with.
