Checking a filter company’s certifications takes about ten minutes and almost nobody does it, mostly because the documents are written to be difficult and the badges are designed to look like each other. The short version is that a certificate is only worth reading if it names four things: the model it covers, the standard it was tested against, the laboratory that did the testing, and a date. If any of the four is missing, you are looking at decoration.
The reason this matters more here than in most purchases is that you cannot check the product yourself. If a sofa is badly made you find out by sitting on it. If a filter removes half of what it claims to, the water looks the same, tastes the same and behaves the same, and you will never know. Independent testing is the only evidence that exists — which is exactly why so much effort goes into producing things that resemble it.
Four different things all called “certified”
These get used interchangeably in sales conversations, and they are not remotely equivalent. Learning to tell them apart is most of the skill.
1. A product test: a named model against a named standard
This is the real thing. A sample of a specific machine goes to an independent laboratory, is run against a published test method — a defined volume of water, a defined challenge, measurements at intervals through the cartridge’s claimed life — and either meets the standard or does not. The resulting report names the model, the standard, the lab and the date.
The international standards written for domestic drinking water treatment are the ones to look for. Some cover aesthetic effects: chlorine, taste, odour, particulates. Others cover health-related contaminant reduction, which is a considerably harder test to pass. Others again cover reverse osmosis systems specifically, or the safety of the materials a component is made from. These are separate standards testing separate things, so “tested to the international standard” without a number attached is a sentence doing no work.
2. A component certificate
A membrane, a carbon block or a housing can carry a certificate from its own manufacturer’s testing. That certificate is genuine and it means something about that part. It says nothing about the finished machine the part was assembled into.
This is the most common honest-looking blur in the industry. An assembler buys a certified membrane, fits it into an uncertified housing with untested tubing and an unspecified pre-filter, and advertises a “certified system”. The membrane’s paperwork is real. The system’s performance has never been measured by anybody. When you are shown a certificate, the question that separates the two is simply: is the model number on this document the model number of the machine you are selling me?
3. A management-system standard, such as ISO 14001
This is a certificate about how a company operates rather than about how a product performs. ISO 14001, for example, concerns environmental management: whether a business has systems for identifying and controlling its environmental impact, and whether an auditor has checked that those systems exist and are followed.
That is a real and worthwhile thing to hold. A company willing to be audited annually against an external standard is a company with processes, and it tells you something genuine about how it is run. It tells you nothing at all about how much chlorine its filter removes. Both facts are true at once, and a seller who presents a management-system certificate as proof of filtration performance is hoping you will not notice the difference.
4. A badge that means nothing
Website graphics reading “Certified Quality”, “Lab Approved” or “100% Safe” belong to nobody, are issued by nobody and can be downloaded by anybody. A supplier’s own logo is not evidence either — a manufacturer’s mark on a component confirms who made it, not that anyone independent tested it. The tell is always the same: no model, no standard, no laboratory.
How to actually check one, in ten minutes
The process is unglamorous and it works.
- Ask for the document, not the claim. A firm holding real reports will send them without hesitation, because publishing them is the point of having them. Reluctance, or an offer to “show you in person”, is itself the answer.
- Find the model number on it and compare it with the machine you are being quoted. A different model, or a family name where a model should be, means the test does not cover what you are buying.
- Find the standard and read what it covers. A standard for aesthetic effects is a chlorine and taste test — worth having, and not the same claim as a health-related contaminant reduction test.
- Find the laboratory and look it up. It should be a real, findable, accredited testing body with an address. If the name returns nothing, that is the whole result of your investigation.
- Check the date and the scope. Certificates expire and are reissued. An undated one, or one whose scope covers a product line that no longer exists, has stopped being evidence.
The UAE-specific marks
Locally, the mark most worth understanding is ESMA registration — the UAE’s own conformity requirement for products placed on the market here. It is a regulatory permission to sell rather than a performance league table: it says the product has been through the national conformity process and is legitimately on sale in this country. That is a real and checkable status, and a supplier who cannot produce it is selling something that has not been through a process it is required to go through.
What it is not is a ranking. Two products can both be properly registered and be very different machines, which is why registration is a floor to stand on rather than a reason to choose.

One thing we should be plain about, because it is a claim other people in this market make and we will not. We are not a laboratory. We do not analyse anyone’s tap water, and we cannot tell you what is in your supply by looking at it, tasting it or waving a meter at a glass of it. What we hold is third-party evidence about our equipment. If you want to know about the supply itself, your emirate’s water authority publishes that information for the network it runs, and it is the authoritative source. A villa site visit, similarly, is a survey of the tank, the plumbing, the space and how much water the household uses — it examines the property, not the water.
What no certificate covers
This is the part missing from every discussion of certification, and it accounts for most of what actually goes wrong.
A test report describes a machine tested under controlled conditions by a laboratory. It says nothing about the machine in your kitchen, because between the two sits an installation and years of servicing. A correctly certified system fitted with the wrong connector to the wrong line, or with a drain saddle that seeps, or with the pre-filter left out because the cabinet was tight, performs nothing like the sample that was tested. And a certified cartridge two years past its interval is not a certified cartridge any more — it is a saturated one, and its paperwork has no bearing on what it is doing.
So the certificate answers one question, which is whether the equipment can do what is claimed. Two further questions decide whether it does so in your home: was it installed properly, and will anyone come back and maintain it. The second is a matter of what your maintenance arrangement actually commits somebody to, and it is worth as much scrutiny as the test report. Certification is a floor, not a ranking
It is tempting to treat documents as a scoreboard and buy from whoever has the most. That is a mistake in both directions.
A properly certified filter can still be the wrong filter — over-specified for a supply that does not need it, undersized for the household using it, or fitted with a proprietary cartridge nobody will sell you in three years. Meanwhile a machine with an unimpeachable test report and no service behind it will be a worse purchase within two years than a plainer one that somebody maintains.
Use certification as a disqualifier rather than a selector. A company that cannot produce a document naming a model, a standard, a laboratory and a date has told you something decisive, and you can stop there.
