The honest answer is that a domestic water filter has no expiry date, and that most systems are retired for reasons that have nothing to do with the machine — a kitchen refit, a move to a different emirate, a household that grew and outgrew the unit. Looked after, the body of a filter outlives its cartridges many times over. It is a set of housings, seals, fittings and, on some systems, a pump, and every one of those parts can be replaced individually.
That is a less satisfying answer than a number, but a number would be dishonest. What a system does have is a set of parts that wear at different rates, and a point at which replacing them one after another stops making sense. This article is about that machine — not the cartridges, which are consumables on their own schedule and are covered in how often to change a water filter in the UAE.
What actually wears out
Five things, roughly in the order they tend to make themselves known.
Seals and O-rings
The first thing to age on any filter, and the least dramatic. Every housing seals against a rubber O-ring that is compressed each time the housing is opened and that hardens slowly in a warm cabinet. A tired O-ring does not fail suddenly; it weeps. This is the reason a proper service replaces seals as a matter of course rather than waiting to be asked, and it is why most under-sink leaks are a five-minute part rather than a new machine.
Housings and fittings
The clear or white plastic bowls holding the cartridges are under mains pressure permanently, which is a steady load rather than a punishing one. What ages them is heat and the repeated stress of being opened and closed. The failure to watch for is a hairline crack around the threads at the top, usually caused by somebody over-tightening a housing at some point in its life. Push-fit connectors and the flexible tubing to the tap harden with age too, and become more likely to weep when disturbed.
The tap
Easy to forget, since it is the only part of the installation anybody sees. A dedicated filter tap has its own small ceramic or rubber valve inside it, and after years of daily use it can start to drip or feel loose on the lever. Taps are replaced on their own; nothing else in the system needs touching.
The pump and the storage tank, on RO systems
A reverse osmosis system usually has a small booster pump that runs whenever the storage tank is refilling. It is an electric motor with bearings, and it is the part with genuine moving wear. It announces itself long before it stops — it gets louder, then takes longer to fill the tank, then struggles to start. It is replaceable, and replacing it is a normal repair rather than the end of the system.
The tank itself has a rubber bladder inside it holding a cushion of air, which is what pushes the water out at the tap. Over years that air pressure falls. The symptom is distinctive and often misread as a dying membrane: you get a small draw of water and then a trickle, however long you wait. A tank can be repressurised or swapped.
A chiller compressor
If you have a chiller, that is the shortest-lived part of the whole arrangement, and it is worth being clear about why it is a separate question. A filter removes things from water; it cannot make water cold. Cooling is refrigeration, done by a compressor, and a compressor in an enclosed kitchen cabinet in this climate works considerably harder than the same unit would in Europe. Ventilation is the single biggest thing under your control — a chiller boxed in by cleaning products and stored bottles runs hotter and for longer than one with air around it. The membrane is a special case
On an RO system the membrane sits between the consumables and the machine. It lasts considerably longer than the cartridges around it, but it is not permanent, and what determines its life is almost entirely how it has been treated.
A membrane is damaged by chlorine. The carbon pre-filter in front of it exists partly to strip that chlorine out before the water reaches it, which means the pre-filter is protecting the most expensive component in the system. Run a system with an exhausted carbon stage for long enough and you are passing chlorinated water straight onto the membrane. What shortens a system’s life in the UAE
- Heat. An under-sink cabinet in a Dubai summer is warm, and plastics, seals and any compressor all age faster warm than cool. Villa equipment installed next to the water tank has the same issue on a larger scale.
- Sediment from the building’s tank. The pre-filter is the sacrificial part that catches it, and in a building whose tank is not cleaned on a sensible schedule it fills faster and lets more through when it is full. - Missed services. Not because of the cartridges themselves, but because everything downstream of a full cartridge picks up the load.
- Being moved. Disconnecting and refitting a system is the moment fittings get disturbed and seals get reused, and a filter that has moved house twice has had more done to it than one that has sat still for a decade.
- Long periods standing unused. Not harmful to the machine, but a system left full and still for a whole summer wants a proper flush rather than a quick rinse before anybody drinks from it.
Telling the end of a system from a service
Almost everything an owner reports is a part, not a machine. Taste returning, flow tailing off, a drip at a joint, a gurgle, a tank that trickles — all of those have a specific cause and a specific replacement part, and our page on common problems and their fixes goes through them symptom by symptom.
A system is genuinely at the end when one of a small number of things is true.
- A housing or manifold has cracked at the threads and no longer seals reliably. That is the one structural failure that is not economically repairable on most units.
- Spare parts are no longer obtainable for that model. This is the most common real reason for replacement, and it is worth asking about before you buy anything rather than after.
- Faults are arriving in different places within a short period. One part failing is wear. Three unrelated parts inside a year on an older unit is the system telling you something.
- A chiller compressor has gone. Depending on the unit, the repair can approach the value of replacing it, and that is a calculation worth doing openly rather than assuming either way.
The test to apply is simple: weigh what the repair costs against how much life is left in everything else. One part on an otherwise sound installation is always worth repairing. The same part on a unit already short of spares usually is not.
A system can be sound and still be the wrong system
Worth separating out, because it gets confused with wearing out. A filter that works perfectly may still no longer suit the household — a family that has doubled in size, a coffee machine that has arrived, or a move from Dubai to Sharjah or Ras Al Khaimah, where the water carries a genuine dissolved load from groundwater rather than the largely desalinated supply further south. What a maintenance plan does for longevity
The unglamorous answer is that it front-runs all of the above. Cartridges are changed before they are full, so the membrane and the pump are never carrying a load they were not designed for. Seals are replaced during a service rather than after a leak. Joints get looked at while they are dry. None of that is exciting and all of it is the difference between a system that is serviced and one that is repaired.
There is a warranty consequence as well, and it is worth being precise about it. Every system comes with twelve months of warranty plus twelve months of maintenance. The uncomfortable bit
A company that expects to sell you a new machine every few years and a company that expects to service the one you have for a decade are not aligned with each other, and only one of them is aligned with you. It is worth noticing which questions a supplier is willing to answer before you buy: whether cartridges for that model will still be available in three years, whether the seals and the pump are stocked separately, and whether the people fitting it are the people who come back.
