Almost every UAE customer arrives asking whether a seven-stage filter is better than a five-stage one. The honest answer is that the number tells you very little on its own. A stage is not a standardised unit of anything. It is a count of cartridges, and the manufacturer decides what gets counted — so splitting one carbon function across two smaller housings adds a stage to the box without adding capacity to the machine.

What decides how a system performs, and for how long, is what sits inside each stage: how much media, how densely packed, and how long the water is in contact with it. After that comes whether the stages chosen suit the water arriving at your building, which here depends on your emirate. This article goes through every stage you are likely to be shown, then sets out what to compare instead of the number.

The stages, one at a time

Water meets them in a fixed order, and that order is not arbitrary: each stage exists partly to protect the one behind it.

Sediment

A spun or pleated cartridge that catches physical material — grit, sand, rust flakes off older pipework, sludge out of a building’s storage tank. It is rated in microns; a lower number means finer.

Its second job matters more than its first. Fine carbon clogs quickly if it has to deal with debris, and an RO membrane is ruined by it. The sediment cartridge is the cheap component taking that punishment so the expensive ones do not, which is why it discolours fastest.

Carbon block

The stage doing most of the visible work in a Dubai or Abu Dhabi kitchen. Dense compressed carbon adsorbs chlorine and the by-products that form when chlorine meets organic matter in a warm tank. Adsorption means contaminants stick to the vast internal surface area of the carbon rather than being strained out by hole size — which is why a thin cartridge that water rushes through underperforms a generous one at the same micron rating.

It is the stage responsible for water tasting of nothing, which is what people notice on the first day, and the stage with a finite capacity: carbon fills up, and a saturated cartridge looks exactly like a fresh one while doing nothing. A second carbon, or a granular stage

Frequently counted separately, and reasonably so. Granular activated carbon behaves differently from a solid block — water moves through it more freely, so it adds contact time and surface area rather than a new function. It is one of the few extra stages that earns its place, because more carbon means more capacity and a longer life. It is not a different capability: two carbon stages do the same thing as one, for longer.

The reverse osmosis membrane

On an RO system this is the heart of the machine and everything else is support: a semi-permeable sheet, wound into a cylinder, with pores fine enough to exclude dissolved salts rather than merely suspended particles. Pressure pushes water through it, and what will not pass leaves down the drain line.

That drain flow is a trade-off rather than a defect — it is how the membrane keeps itself clean, and it is discussed in whether reverse osmosis wastes water. The other consequence is speed: an RO membrane works slowly, so the system stores what it makes in a small pressurised tank.

The ultrafiltration membrane

UF is often presented as an alternative to RO and is not really comparable. It is a physical barrier with pores far finer than any sediment cartridge, excluding particles, cysts and bacteria-sized material — but it is not fine enough to remove dissolved salts, which pass straight through.

That makes it useful where the dissolved load is already low, since it adds a hard physical barrier without the slow production, storage tank or drain line an RO membrane brings — and the wrong stage where that load is the actual problem. UF and RO are not two grades of the same thing; they draw the line in different places.

The post-carbon, or polishing, stage

On any system that stores water, a small carbon cartridge sits between the tank and the tap. Stored water picks up a flat taste, so the polishing stage means what you pour has just passed through carbon rather than having waited. A small cartridge doing a small job, legitimately counted — and one of the easiest to point at when a manufacturer wants the number higher.

The mineral or alkaline stage

This stage needs the most care, because it is where most of the category’s marketing lives.

A mineral cartridge holds a media that dissolves a small quantity of mineral content into the water and typically nudges the pH upward. The direction of that is worth being precise about. All UAE tap water is desalinated seawater, so there is very little dissolved in it before any filter touches it: a mineral stage adds something that was not there rather than keeping something that was. Any claim that a filter preserves minerals already present is a European spring-water pitch, and it does not describe the supply in this country.

What that addition is worth is largely a matter of taste — some find the water rounder and less flat, others notice nothing. We would not make a health argument for it and nor should anyone else; the claims made about alkaline water are examined in whether alkaline water is worth it. It is also one more cartridge to replace.

Ultraviolet

A lamp the water passes under on its way to the tap, dealing with microbiological material rather than anything chemical or physical, and it strains nothing out. It is specified where storage conditions warrant it rather than fitted as standard, and the lamp dims with age, so it has a service life whether or not it lights — our piece on UV filtration in the UAE covers when it is worth having.

Why the count is a marketing number

Once you know what the stages are, the problem with comparing two boxes by their numbers becomes obvious. Nothing defines a stage. A manufacturer may count a mesh screen, a short length of granular carbon, a mineral cartridge, or on occasion the tap itself. Two systems both advertised as seven-stage can hold entirely different quantities of media, and a five-stage system with generous cartridges will out-perform a nine-stage one built from thin ones. The count is easy to print and easy to raise, which is why it ends up on the front of the box while the specification that matters does not.

There is also a point past which extra stages cost you something. Every additional cartridge is another housing, another seal, another consumable and another restriction in the flow path, which is one reason an over-stacked system runs slowly at the tap.

What to compare instead

Four questions are worth more than the number, and a competent supplier answers all four.

  • What is each stage, in words. If a seller cannot tell you what stage four does, the count is decoration. Two carbon stages described as two carbon stages is an honest specification; “seven-stage purification” with no breakdown is not.
  • How often does each cartridge need replacing. The most revealing question of all, because the interval is a direct proxy for how much media is inside. A system whose cartridges last six months holds more than one needing changes every three, and the running cost follows from it.
  • Is there independent certification. Testing by a recognised body means a system was measured against a standard rather than described against one — ours are listed on the certifications page.
  • Does the arrangement suit your emirate. The right stages depend on the supply, and that is the part no count can express.

Which stages you actually need

All UAE tap water starts as desalinated seawater, but what happens between the plant and your kitchen varies across the country, and that should drive the specification.

In Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the supply arrives with very little dissolved in it. The real issues are the chlorine kept in the water to protect it on its journey, and whatever the building’s own tank and pipework contribute along the way. Sediment, generous carbon and a fine physical barrier address exactly that, which is why a well-built five-stage system is usually the sensible recommendation here rather than the entry point to something larger.

In Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain, more groundwater enters the supply and there is a genuine dissolved load. That is the problem reverse osmosis was built to solve, so an RO membrane there is the appropriate specification rather than an upgrade — the differences are set out in how northern emirates water differs from Dubai.

RO remains a legitimate choice anywhere for somebody who simply wants the most thorough system available, and plenty of Dubai households choose it on that basis. That is a preference rather than a diagnosis, and the trade-offs are laid out in reverse osmosis against carbon filtration.

What no number of stages will do

Two limits are worth stating plainly, because both are common disappointments.

The first is temperature. A basic under-sink or counter-top system delivers water at whatever temperature your supply is, and here that is warm all year round. Filtration removes things from water; it has no thermal function, and no stage count changes that. Cold water needs a chiller, a separate machine with its own cabinet space, a power socket and at least two hours more on the day of fitting.

The second is that a filter is not a measurement of your particular tap. Whatever the count, a drinking system is a well-understood piece of equipment addressing well-understood things, and nobody — ourselves included — should present it as an analysis of your water.

The practical version

Ask what each stage is, how long each cartridge lasts and whether the system is certified, and start from your emirate rather than a number. That is more work than comparing five against seven, but it predicts what you will live with.
