Anyone who trains outdoors in the Gulf between May and September knows the problem. It is not the distance or the weight. It is the heat, and the way it turns a session that felt easy in February into a grind. Hydration advice is everywhere, but one question gets asked a lot and answered badly: does the temperature of what you drink actually matter, or is that just preference?

It matters. Not enormously, and not in every condition — but in hot, humid weather it is one of the few free improvements available. Here is what the research supports, what it does not, and what that means in a country where the tap runs warm.

What cold fluid actually does during exercise

Most of the energy your muscles produce comes out as heat. Your body sheds it mainly by sweating, and sweat only cools you when it evaporates. That is why humidity is so punishing: the air already carries water, evaporation slows, and heat builds faster than you can shed it. Core temperature rises, your heart rate climbs to move blood to the skin, and the same pace feels harder.

Drinking cold fluid adds a second route out. A cold drink absorbs heat from inside you as it warms to body temperature — a small internal heat sink that does not depend on evaporation at all. This is why it is called internal cooling, and it is studied alongside cold-water immersion and ice vests under the heading of pre-cooling.

The measured effects are consistent. Systematic reviews of internal cooling in the heat report meaningful reductions in core body temperature and sweat rate, with a smaller effect on heart rate. People also report feeling cooler and more comfortable, which is not nothing — perceived effort is a large part of why sessions get abandoned.

Does it actually improve performance?

The honest answer: it depends on conditions, and the effect is bigger in exactly the weather the UAE has.

Trials in hot and humid conditions have found real endurance improvements from drinking cold fluid or ice slurry, some of them large. Trials in cool or moderate conditions have generally found nothing — if you are not heat-limited, removing heat does not help, because heat was not what stopped you. Some researchers suggest the benefit largely disappears in warm but dry, windy weather, where evaporative cooling already works well.

It is not universal even in the heat: some studies found ice slurry lowered core temperature without improving running times. The fair summary is a genuine reduction in thermal strain, and a performance gain that shows up reliably in hot humid trials but not everywhere. For a long ride, a run or football in Dubai in August, that is about as favourable as sports research gets.

How much to drink, and when

Temperature is a refinement. Volume is the thing that actually matters, and it is where most people go wrong in summer here. Broadly, following established sports-medicine guidance:

  • Before. Around half a litre roughly two hours before you start, which gives your body time to absorb what it needs and pass what it does not. Turning up already down on fluid is a much bigger handicap than any drink temperature.
  • During. For most sessions, drink to thirst rather than to a schedule. For longer or harder efforts, something in the region of 200 to 300 millilitres every 10 to 20 minutes is a common recommendation. Do not force large volumes far beyond thirst — drinking far more than you are losing carries its own risk of diluting blood sodium, which is dangerous.
  • After. Replace more than you lost, because you will keep sweating and passing fluid afterwards. Weighing yourself before and after is the only accurate way to know your own sweat rate, and in this climate it is often much higher than people expect.
  • Sweating heavily for over an hour? You are losing salt as well as water. That is when an electrolyte drink earns its place. For a 40-minute gym session, plain water is fine.

The myth: cold water “shocks” the system

There is a persistent belief, found in several culinary and traditional-medicine traditions, that cold water is bad for digestion — that it solidifies fats, slows the stomach or shocks the body.

The evidence does not support it. Cold water does not congeal fat in your stomach; food and drink mix rapidly with stomach contents sitting at around body temperature, and cold liquid is warmed within minutes. Studies do show that very cold liquids can slightly slow the early phase of stomach emptying, but the effect is small and there is no evidence of harm in healthy people. If you personally feel bloated or crampy after ice-cold drinks, that discomfort is real and you should drink whatever feels better — but it is a preference, not a general health rule.

The genuine cautions

There are two, and they are modest.

Very cold water can be unpleasant mid-effort. When you are breathing hard, ice-cold fluid can be uncomfortable enough that you drink less of it — and drinking less is a worse outcome than drinking something slightly less cold. Cool rather than freezing is the practical sweet spot.

Some people get a cold-stimulus headache. The brief, sharp pain most people call brain freeze is triggered by rapid cooling at the roof of the mouth. It is harmless and passes in under a minute, but worth avoiding when you are moving. Smaller mouthfuls, taken less quickly, prevent it.

People with certain heart conditions are sometimes advised to be cautious with sudden cold exposure. If that describes you, follow your own doctor’s advice rather than anything written here.

The part specific to the UAE: your tap is not cold

All of the above assumes you can get cold water. In this country, that assumption does not hold.

Tap water across the Emirates comes out warm for most of the year, and in summer it can come out genuinely hot. The reason is straightforward: water sits in rooftop and outdoor storage tanks and travels through pipes running through walls and roof spaces, all of it baking in ambient temperatures well above 40°C for months. By the time it reaches the tap it has taken on the temperature of the building. Nothing is wrong with the water — it has simply been sitting in an oven. Which brings us to the most common misunderstanding we hear. A water filter does not make water cold. Filtration removes things — chlorine, sediment, metals, particles. It has no cooling function whatsoever. A standard under-sink or countertop filter delivers water at whatever temperature the tap gives it. In a Dubai summer, that means very good water that is still warm.

Cold water at home requires a machine that actively chills it. There are two routes:

  • A system with a built-in chiller. These sit in the kitchen and cool the drinking water as it is dispensed. This is what most households want — it covers drinking water, bottles for the gym and ice.
  • A water tank chiller. A different piece of equipment entirely. It cools the villa’s stored supply, so it is not only the kitchen tap that runs cool — the showers do too. If the problem is a scalding shower in July rather than a warm glass of water, this is the one that solves it. Whole-villa work is always quoted after a site visit, because it depends on your tank, your plumbing and how the household uses water.

The distinction matters because people frequently buy the wrong one. Cold bottle before a run: chiller in the kitchen. Bearable shower in August: cool the tank.

Putting it together

If you train in this climate, the sequence that works is unglamorous: arrive already hydrated, drink through the session rather than saving it for the end, replace more than you lost afterwards, add electrolytes when you have been sweating hard for over an hour — and make what you drink cold, because in heat and humidity that is a small, evidence-supported advantage rather than a preference. The catch in the UAE is that cold is the one part that is not free. It comes from the machine, not the mains.
