If you are in a villa and the cold tap runs hot in August, the first thing worth knowing is that no filter will fix it. Filtration and cooling are two entirely separate jobs done by two entirely different machines, and a great many people buy the first hoping for the second.

The second thing worth knowing is that there are two quite different products both sold under the word “chiller”, and choosing between them is the whole decision. An under-sink chiller cools drinking water at one kitchen tap and does nothing anywhere else in the property. A water tank chiller cools the stored water itself, so every shower, every bathroom and every outlet in the villa runs cool. They solve different problems, cost very different amounts and involve very different installations. Why a villa’s water is warm in a way an apartment’s is not

Tower flats are fed from tanks inside the building, in plant rooms and service risers, in the shade and often in air conditioning. The water is warm, because everything here is, but it is warm in a mild way.

A villa is different because of where its water waits. Most villas store their supply in their own tank, and that tank sits outdoors, exposed, on a property where the ambient temperature exceeds 45°C for weeks at a time and the surfaces around it are hotter still. Water is an excellent absorber of heat and a poor loser of it. A tank of several hundred litres sitting in full sun through a July afternoon does not stay near air temperature — it climbs, and it stays climbed overnight because there is nothing to cool it down.

The consequence is that every outlet in the property is fed from a reservoir that has been heated in storage. This is not a hot-water problem that has crossed over; it is the cold supply itself. It is why the cold tap in a villa in August can be genuinely unpleasant rather than merely tepid, why a shower can start uncomfortable and stay that way, and why running the tap for a minute does not help — behind the water in the pipe is more water at the same temperature. The two machines people confuse

An under-sink chiller

A compact refrigeration unit that lives in the kitchen cabinet, takes water from the filtered line and delivers it cold at a dedicated tap. It holds a small chilled reserve, so the first glasses come out properly cold and it catches up between draws.

It is the right answer for a very common request: cold drinking water in the kitchen, without bottles, without waiting for a jug in the fridge. It is a considerably smaller job and a considerably smaller cost than anything tank-scale, and it can usually be fitted alongside filtration in the same visit. What it will not do is anything for the rest of the villa. It cools what passes through it, which is a drinking line at one sink. Your shower, your bathrooms, your garden tap and your washing machine are on a different path entirely and are unaffected. If your complaint is a hot shower, this is not the machine.

A water tank chiller

This works on the storage rather than at the point of use. A refrigeration unit is installed next to your water tank and circulates the stored water through a heat exchanger, taking the temperature of the reservoir itself down and holding it there against the sun.

Because everything in the property is fed from that tank, cooling it cools everything downstream — showers, basins, the kitchen mixer, the outside tap. It is the only arrangement that changes how a shower feels in August, and for households that describe summer as genuinely uncomfortable rather than merely annoying, it is the thing they are actually asking for.

A filter cannot make water cold

Worth stating on its own, because it is the single most common misunderstanding in this whole subject.

Filtration is a physical and chemical process that removes things from water. It has no thermal function at all. Water leaves a basic under-sink or counter-top system at the temperature it entered — which here means warm — and that is true of every filter regardless of stage count or price. Cooling requires refrigeration: a compressor, a refrigerant circuit and electricity to run it. Some systems combine both in one cabinet, and where that is the case, the cooling is being done by the chiller inside it and not by the filtration.

If a dealer implies a filter will solve a temperature complaint, they are either being careless or selling you something on a promise it cannot keep.

Who each one suits

The under-sink route fits households whose real complaint is drinking water — they want a cold glass without keeping bottles in the fridge, and the shower is survivable. It is the majority of enquiries, and it is the cheaper and simpler answer.

The tank route fits households where the temperature of the whole supply is the problem: a family finding summer showers genuinely unpleasant, a villa with a large exposed tank and an unshaded plot, or a property with small children where a hot cold-tap is a practical nuisance all day. It is also worth considering where the villa is already having whole-property filtration specified, because the two are installed in the same place and the plumbing work overlaps — the trade-offs of treating the whole property against treating one tap are laid out in whole-house against kitchen filtration.

What a tank chiller installation actually involves

This is where the honest answer is that nobody can tell you over the phone, and anybody who does is guessing.

The unit has to be sized against your tank’s volume, because a chiller too small for the storage never catches up and one too large is money spent on capacity you cannot use. Its position has to be worked out — it goes next to your water tank, needs air around it to shed the heat it removes, and needs to be reachable for servicing rather than wedged somewhere a technician cannot stand. It needs a power supply of the right rating at that location, which in some villas already exists and in others does not. And the pipework has to be arranged so the circulation loop works with your existing plumbing rather than against it.

All four of those are properties of your building. That is why a whole-villa installation is specified after somebody has come and looked, and quoted only afterwards — a villa site visit looks at the tank, its position, the available power and the plumbing, and the specification follows from what is found. It is a survey of the property, not of the water; we do not analyse anybody’s supply.

On timing: a full villa system is a three to four hour job, and adding a chiller adds at least another two hours on top. It is a morning’s work with the water off for part of it, not a fifteen-minute call.

Running one, honestly

A tank chiller is a refrigeration unit and it consumes electricity, more of it in the months when it is working hardest, which are exactly the months you want it. Nobody should sell it as a free improvement.

What it is fairly compared against is the alternative behaviour it replaces: running a tap for minutes at a time waiting for water that never cools, and the cases of bottled water that a household in this position tends to accumulate. Whether that trade is worth it is a household judgement, and it depends on how bad your particular tank is. What we would not do is pretend the question does not exist.

The cheaper measures worth doing regardless

Two of these help whether or not you ever fit a chiller, and they are worth doing first.

  • Shade the tank. Direct sun on an exposed tank through a summer afternoon is the largest single input of heat. A cover, a built structure or anything that keeps the sun off makes a real difference to the peak temperature the water reaches, and it is a modest piece of work.
  • Insulate the tank and the exposed runs. Insulation slows heat getting in during the day and, just as usefully, keeps the water cooler overnight. Exposed pipe runs across a hot roof surface or an unshaded wall heat the water again on its way to the tap even if the tank has been managed.
  • Keep the tank clean. Not a temperature measure, but warm stored water is exactly the condition in which sediment and biofilm build, so a villa with a heat problem has a cleaning interval worth keeping to — covered in how often a villa tank should be cleaned.

These will not deliver a cold shower. They will move an unpleasant one towards a tolerable one, at a fraction of the cost, and they make a chiller work less hard if you do fit one later.

Deciding

If the complaint is drinking water, an under-sink chiller answers it directly and cheaply. If the complaint is the whole property — the shower, the basins, the summer as a whole — then a tank chiller is the only thing that addresses the cause, and the specification comes out of a site visit rather than a price list. And in either case, the filter is not the machine doing the cooling; it is doing a different job that happens to sit in the same cabinet.
