Most of what keeps a water filter working is done by a technician once or twice a year, and there is no honest way around that: cartridges are consumables, and a housing under mains pressure is not somewhere to improvise. It does not follow that an owner can do nothing in between. There is a real list of small jobs that help, take a few minutes and are entirely safe — and a shorter list of things that should never be attempted at home.

This page sets out both, in that order. If you want one rule to carry away, it is this: the outside of the system is yours; anything that involves opening it, releasing pressure or touching a sealed part is not. That line settles almost every decision you will face at the kitchen cupboard.

Clean the tap spout and the aerator

The filtered tap is the last thing your water touches, and it is the part of the system most exposed to ordinary kitchen life. Wiping the spout with a clean damp cloth once a week takes ten seconds and matters more than it sounds, because anything sitting on the outside of that outlet is downstream of every cartridge in the cupboard.

Many filter taps also have a small aerator threaded into the end of the spout. It usually unscrews by hand, and it is one of the few threaded parts you are welcome to touch, because it sits on the open side of the tap with no pressure behind it once the tap is closed. Rinse it, clear any grit, refit it finger-tight. If it does not come away easily, leave it — it can seize, and forcing it damages the spout rather than the screen. A tap that has slowed while the rest of the system seems normal is quite often nothing more than a blocked aerator.

Look under the sink properly, once a month

Open the cupboard, take a torch, and spend two minutes looking rather than glancing. You are checking for damp, and for anything pressing where it should not.

Damp is the important one. Run a dry hand along the underside of each connection and along the base of the cabinet, and look at the board for a dark patch or a lifted edge. A slow seep can run for weeks without forming a visible drip, and by the time it announces itself the cabinet floor has usually taken more damage than the fitting. If you find anything wet, lay dry kitchen paper underneath and come back in an hour — wet paper tells you precisely which joint is responsible, which is the most useful thing you can hand a technician.

Pressure on the tubing is the other. Filter systems are connected with narrow flexible pipe, and the commonest cause of a leak in a domestic kitchen is not the machine but somebody storing a heavy box against a pipe and slowly bending it against a fitting.

Keep the cabinet dry, clear and reachable

A system boxed in behind cleaning products cannot be seen, so a seep goes unnoticed; it cannot be reached, so a routine cartridge change turns into an unpacking exercise; and if there is a chiller down there, the airflow it needs is being blocked by a stack of carrier bags. Keeping a clear working area is the least glamorous maintenance on this page and probably the highest value.

Wipe the outside of the unit

The housings, the head, the tap body and any visible tubing can all be wiped with a damp cloth and, if you want, a mild washing-up solution on the cloth rather than sprayed at the machine. Dry afterwards. This is cosmetic in the best sense — on a clean unit, a new stain or a slight weep at a collar is obvious the moment it appears.

Two cautions. Do not use bleach, solvents or abrasive cream on plastic housings, which can craze and become brittle at exactly the point that matters. And do not spray anything liquid near a chiller or any powered part; keep water away from cables and sockets entirely.

Check the drain line is clear

This applies to reverse osmosis systems, which send some water to waste as part of how they work. The drain line is a thin pipe running from the system to a clamp on your waste pipe, and it needs to be free.

What you can safely do is look. Follow the line by eye and confirm it has no sharp kink, is not trapped behind something stored in the cupboard, and is not squashed flat where it turns a corner. A kinked drain line makes a system behave oddly in ways that get blamed on the cartridges. What you should not do is disconnect it or interfere with the clamp — that is a plumbing connection, and if it is blocked rather than kinked it needs someone who can put it back properly. Flush the system after time away

This is the most useful thing on the list for anyone who travels, and it takes five minutes. Water that has stood still in a cartridge and a length of tubing for weeks is not the same as water that has been moving through it. When you come back from any absence of a week or more, open the filtered tap and let it run for three to five minutes, then fill and discard the first jug or two. If the system has stood for a month, run it for longer.

The same applies to the first draw after a building water cut. Cloudiness immediately afterwards is usually dissolved air, which clears from the bottom of the glass upwards within a minute; sediment does the opposite and settles.

If you are going away for a long summer, it is also reasonable to close the small isolation valve that feeds the filter, so nothing is left under pressure in an unattended home. Note which way you turned it — a valve left part-closed on your return is a very convincing impersonation of a failing system.

Notice changes early, and write them down

The most valuable maintenance an owner does is paying attention. Cartridges do not fail with a warning light; they reach the end of their capacity and stop doing much while looking exactly as they did the day they were fitted. The first sign is almost always taste, followed by flow.

Keep a note of the date of the last cartridge change, and jot down anything that changes — a taste that has crept back, a tap that fills a jug more slowly, a new noise, a damp patch. What not to do, and why

Everything above is on the outside. The following are not, and each has a specific reason attached rather than a general warning.

  • Do not open a pressurised housing. Housings are held closed by mains pressure and are opened with a dedicated spanner after the feed has been isolated and the line depressurised through the tap, in that order. Attempted with pressure still in the system, a housing can come away with real force, and there is a full cabinet of water behind it. This is the one item we would ask you not to try under any circumstances.
  • Do not force a housing that is stuck. Housings seize, and the temptation is more leverage. What usually gives way is the thread or the plastic body, which turns a routine cartridge change into a replacement part and a wet kitchen.
  • Do not tighten fittings. Push-fit connectors and housing collars seal on an O-ring or a collet, not on force. There is no fitting in a domestic filter that a spanner improves, and over-tightening reliably turns a slow drip into a cracked component.
  • Do not touch a chiller’s sealed refrigeration. The cooling circuit is closed and charged, with no owner-serviceable parts and no adjustments. Clearing space around it for airflow is helpful and is the limit.   • Do not fit cartridges from an unknown source. Beyond the question of what is inside them, fitting a part yourself is the clearest way to end up arguing about whether a later fault was yours or ours.

Where the warranty sits

This is what most people are quietly worried about when they decide whether to open a cupboard. A WaterClub system comes with 12 months of warranty plus 12 months of maintenance. Nothing in the first half of this page affects any of that. Wiping a spout, clearing a cabinet, rinsing an aerator, looking for damp and flushing after a holiday are ordinary care and are expected of an owner. Opening housings, dismantling a chiller or fitting parts of unknown origin is where the line falls, for the same reason in each case: that is where a small mistake becomes an expensive one. A simple rhythm

  • Weekly. Wipe the tap spout.
  • Monthly. Torch under the sink: damp, tubing, clutter. Wipe the outside of the unit.
  • Every few months. Rinse the aerator if it unscrews easily. Follow the drain line by eye.
  • After any trip. Run the tap for three to five minutes and discard the first jug.
  • Twice a year. The cartridge change, which is not a home job.

That is the whole of it. It is deliberately short, because a routine nobody keeps is worth nothing, and because the honest position is that an owner’s contribution is attention and cleanliness rather than spanners.
