The Villa Water Standard
A specification for water filtration in UAE villas, written from 20,326 recorded home visits.

Why this exists
There is no agreed standard in this country for what a villa’s water filtration should look like. A villa owner buying a system has no way to judge what they were sold, whether it is being looked after, or what “properly maintained” even means. Every company answers differently, and most answer in a way that suits what they are selling.
We have been installing and servicing filtration in UAE homes for ten years. In that time we have built the largest field record of villa water systems in the country: 20,326 recorded service visits to 4,962 households between May 2023 and April 2026, across every emirate.
So we wrote down what that record shows. Not what a manufacturer’s manual claims, and not what we would like to be true — what actually happens in UAE homes.
Scope
This standard covers the equipment. Filters, membranes, housings, seals, fittings, pressure, flow, tanks, drain lines, and the record of service.
This standard does not cover water quality. WaterClub is a filtration company, not a laboratory. Nothing in this document is a claim about what is in any household’s water, and no inspection carried out against it involves testing water. Any supplier claiming to measure water quality as part of a free visit should be asked which accredited laboratory is doing it.
It applies to permanent villa installations — systems plumbed into the property, typically at or near the water tank. It does not apply to portable or sealed countertop units, which are not built to be opened and cannot be maintained to any standard.

We expected repairs to be caused by neglected filters. They are not. A repair is called in at a median of 75 days since the last service — on a recently serviced system. Only 10% of repairs happen on a system already past its interval. Failures in UAE villas are overwhelmingly a fitting problem, not a maintenance problem.
And leaks are not one failure among many. They are 57% of every repair we attend and 6% of everything the field team does. No other failure comes close.
The Standard
Service interval: 182 days
A villa system shall be serviced at intervals not exceeding 182 days.
Evidence: Median observed interval across 5,778 real intervals is 187 days, and the median gap from installation to first service is 182 days. This is not a manufacturer's recommendation — it is the interval at which UAE households actually consume filtration. 57% of real intervals exceed it; one in ten exceeds 312 days.
The first service date is set before the installer leaves
The date of the first service shall be recorded and given to the householder on the day of installation, before the installing company leaves the property.
Evidence: 48% of systems are already past 182 days before their first filter change. The most-missed service in a system's life is its first one. A date agreed at the door and written down is the single cheapest correction available.
A dated, named service history shall exist
Every service shall be recorded with the date, the technician's name, what was replaced, and the date of the next service. The record belongs to the householder, not only to the supplier.
Evidence: Only 50% of systems ever receive a third service, and 38% of households have not been visited in a year. A system with no written history cannot be assessed by anyone — including the next company the householder calls, and including a buyer of the property.
Fittings, seals and housings inspected at every service
Every joint, housing, O-ring, connector and seal on the installation shall be inspected and recorded at every service, whether or not a fault is reported.
Evidence: Leaks are 57% of all repairs attended and 6% of all field work — by a wide margin the largest failure mode in UAE villas. Critically, they are not predicted by neglect: repairs arrive at a median of 75 days since the last service. How a system was fitted matters more than how often its filters are changed. Any standard that only counts filter dates misses the thing that actually fails.
Pre-filtration before the tank
A villa shall have serviceable pre-filtration at the point of entry, upstream of the storage tank — not filtration at the kitchen tap alone.
Evidence: A villa stores its water before using it. Sediment reaching an unprotected tank is redistributed to every outlet in the property, and no under-sink unit can correct it. Villa households take a median of 5.6 visits against 4.8 for apartments; the difference is load carried upstream.
Pressure and flow verified at the furthest outlet
Pressure at the point of entry and flow at the furthest tap from the system shall be checked and recorded at every service.
Evidence: A villa has long pipe runs and multiple floors. A system performing correctly at the plant room can be delivering poorly two floors up, and the householder experiences that as a failed system. It is not detectable at the equipment.
Interval adjusted for household size, not assumed
The service interval shall be set against the number of people actually living in the property, including domestic staff, and reviewed at each visit.
Evidence: Household size is the largest single driver of consumption, and villa households routinely include residents the account was never opened for. A standard interval applied to an eight-person household is a system running past its capacity from the first day.
One villa may require more than one system
Where a property has separate kitchens, an annexe, staff accommodation or a majlis with its own supply, each shall be assessed on its own.
Evidence: 487 households in the record run more than one system. A single assessment of a villa's main kitchen does not describe the property.
Waste and drain lines correctly run and secured
Where a system produces a waste stream, the drain line shall be correctly routed, secured, and free from back-pressure, and shall be inspected at every service.
Evidence: An unsecured drain line is a leak that has not happened yet, in a category that is already 57% of every repair we attend.
Serviceable by design
Equipment on a permanent villa installation shall be openable, and its consumables shall be obtainable in the UAE.
Evidence: A sealed unit cannot be inspected against S4, S6 or S9, and a system whose cartridges cannot be sourced locally reaches the end of its life at its first service. Neither can be maintained to any standard, at any price.
How a villa is assessed
A property is assessed against all ten clauses in a single visit of about 45 minutes. Each clause is marked, and the householder receives a written report carrying the date, the technician’s name, each clause marked individually, the condition found, and the next service date.

An assessment records what was found on the day. It is not a guarantee, a warranty, or a statement about water quality.
The honest limits of this standard
Published so that nobody has to guess at them.
- It is drawn from WaterClub’s own field record. Every household in it is one we have attended. Households nobody ever serviced are, by definition, absent — and the true picture in the UAE is therefore likely to be worse than these figures, not better.
- It measures equipment, never water. No clause here says anything about what is in anybody’s supply.
- The record runs May 2023 to April 2026 and is weighted towards Dubai, where most of our work is.
- Job descriptions were written by dispatchers, not by a research process. We read them as they were typed. Where a category was ambiguous we counted it conservatively.
- We sell filtration. A standard published by a supplier deserves scepticism. That is why every clause carries its number and why the limits are printed here. Hold us to it as readily as anyone else.
Review
This standard will be reviewed annually against the field record. Edition 2 is due in 2027 and will restate every figure above from a full year of additional data.
