Reducing our carbon footprint is easier than you think. There are so many small steps we can take to make our daily lives and our homes, more eco-friendly, and it doesn’t have to break the bank.
This month we mark Earth Day on April 22, so it’s a great time to help teach our children what it means to protect the planet and the consequences of us neglecting it.
When they see us doing these things in our lives, it inspires them to know it’s a commitment we are all signing up to. Just like children whose parents exercise naturally want to exercise too, so do children whose parents practice eco-friendly habits, do the
same.
Here at Waterclub, we know that small changes go a long way, so here are some tips from our team to consider in your home or workplace.
1. Ditch your plastic bottles and install a home water filter system from Waterclub – you’ll never need another plastic bottle again. For just 49AED per month, you have a healthier, cheaper and more eco-friendly alternative to plastic.
2. Install energy-efficient lighting: Use LED bulbs which use less electricity and last longer than traditional incandescent bulbs.
3. Install a programmable thermostat: This allows you to regulate the temperature in your home or office and save energy by reducing heating and cooling when you’re away.
4. Use natural cleaning products: Switch to environmentally-friendly cleaning products which are free from harsh chemicals and are biodegradable. Remember, that what we wash down our drains ends up in the earth and oceans, so it all counts.
5. Install low-flow shower-heads: These shower-heads reduce the amount of water used per shower, conserving water and reducing your water bills.
6. Switch to energy-efficient appliances: When purchasing new appliances, look for those with an Energy Star rating. These are designed to use less energy and save you money on your electricity bills.
7. Use reusable bags: Thankfully, Dubai is making this impossible to forget, but if you’re not in Dubai, this is a really easy way to cut down your daily disposable plastic use. Pack a nice strong bag or two in the car so you never go without.
8. Use composting: Composting is an excellent way to reduce waste and create nutrient-rich soil for your garden. The UAE has many great options available in the market.
9. Plant trees: Planting trees in your garden helps to absorb carbon dioxide from the air and reduce your carbon footprint.
10. Try a window covering/blind to reduce the heat in your home or office so you don’t need to use as much AC cooling.
11. Turn the AC up a few degrees – 24 is recommended for a healthy day to day temperature.
