800-WATERCLUB

If you run a gym, a fitness studio or a martial arts or yoga space in the UAE, you already know water is not optional. Members expect it, they expect it cold, and in summer they drink a lot of it. The question is how to provide it, and for most gyms the choice is between three arrangements: selling bottled water at reception, running a 5-gallon cooler, or fitting a plumbed-in water station connected to the supply. Each has a place. For a gym with steady membership the plumbed-in station usually wins, and this article explains why, where it does not, and what to check before you choose a machine.

A note on scope. This is about how a premises provides drinking water: capacity, temperature, hygiene and running costs. It makes no claim about hydration, performance or anybody’s health, which are matters for a coach or a doctor.

Why gyms are a demanding case

An office drinks water steadily through the day. A gym drinks it in waves. A full class finishes and twenty people want to fill a bottle in the same five minutes. The early-morning and after-work peaks are intense; the middle of the afternoon is quiet. Any arrangement has to cope with the peak, not the average.

Temperature matters more than in an office as well. UAE tap water is warm all year, because it sits in tanks and pipework in the heat before it reaches you. Nobody coming off a treadmill wants warm water, so whatever you provide has to chill, and it has to keep chilling through a rush. We explain why the supply runs warm in why Dubai tap water is warm.

Option one: bottled water at reception

Selling small bottles is simple and brings in a little revenue. It also means stock to order, store and chill, a fridge running constantly, and a steady stream of single-use plastic in your bins — something a growing number of members notice and comment on. Many gyms keep a fridge of bottles for people who arrive without one, which is reasonable. As the only way to get water, it tends to annoy the regulars who come four times a week.

Option two: a 5-gallon cooler

A delivered cooler is the default in many studios. It works, but it has the weaknesses gyms feel most:

  • It runs out at the peak. A cooler empties fastest exactly when a class finishes, and swapping a bottle mid-rush means somebody lifting a heavy bottle above waist height in a busy space.
  • The chilling falls behind. A small cooler’s reservoir is quickly emptied of cold water during a rush, and what follows is not very cold.
  • Storage and deliveries. Full and empty bottles take floor space, and somebody has to be there to receive the delivery.

We set out the full comparison, including the costs that never appear on the invoice, in water coolers versus plumbed-in systems. Most of it applies to a gym, only more so.

Option three: a plumbed-in water station

A plumbed-in machine connects to the cold supply, filters the water and chills it on demand. It does not run out, nobody lifts anything, and there is nothing to store. Members fill their own bottles, which most gym-goers already carry.

The points that decide whether a particular machine suits a gym are worth checking specifically:

  • Chilled capacity. Ask how much cold water the machine can deliver in a short burst and how quickly it recovers. A machine sized for a ten-person office may struggle after a full class.
  • Bottle-friendly dispensing. The gap under the tap needs to take a tall sports bottle, and a push-to-fill or lever action is easier with a bottle in one hand.
  • Floor-standing or counter-top. A floor-standing unit suits a corridor or the edge of the gym floor; a counter-top unit suits a reception or café bar.
  • Hot water. Useful for a staff room or a juice bar making tea; not needed on the gym floor. Many machines offer it with a child lock.

Our floor-standing models, including the Pronto XL built for larger teams, give filtered hot and cold water from the supply. If you want sparkling water for a members’ lounge or café, that exists only on our commercial Fizzy and Aqua Bar machines.

Hygiene: what members actually look at

Members notice the tap and the drip tray long before anything else. Whatever you choose, these are the things that keep a water point looking and being well kept:

  • Clean the spout and the drip tray daily. They are touched by bottles all day. Put it on the cleaning checklist with the changing rooms.
  • Do not let people put mouths or bottle necks against the spout. A small sign does more than you would expect.
  • Keep to the filter schedule. A gym puts far more water through a machine than a household does, so the cartridges need changing on time, and sometimes more often than the standard interval. Why that matters is explained in what happens if you do not change a filter.
  • Know your building’s tank. Whatever happens at the machine, the water has come through the building’s storage tank. Ask your landlord or facility manager when it was last cleaned.

Where bottles are still the right answer

Pop-up classes, outdoor bootcamps and studios in a space with no water supply near the training area have no realistic alternative to bottles or coolers. A very small studio running a handful of classes a week may also find a cooler perfectly adequate. We would rather say so than fit a machine that is barely used.

Questions we are asked

Does the landlord need to agree?

Yes. A plumbed-in machine connects to the building’s supply, so you need your landlord’s or mall’s agreement before installation. It is usually a small job — a counter-top or floor-standing unit takes 20 to 45 minutes to fit.

Can one machine serve the whole gym?

It depends on membership and peak times. Larger gyms often put one station on the gym floor and one in the reception or lounge, which also spreads the queue.

Who looks after it?

Filter changes and servicing are done on a maintenance plan, so the machine is checked on a schedule rather than when somebody notices a problem.

The short version

Gyms need cold water in bursts, and that is where coolers and bottles struggle. A plumbed-in station sized for your peak removes the deliveries, the lifting and the running out.
