If you have looked at water systems in the UAE in the last few years, somebody has offered you alkaline water. It comes up in shopping malls, at exhibition stands and in the pitch of a good number of filter companies. The machines are expensive, the language is confident, and the customer is left with the impression of having been shown a better class of water.

This article sets out what alkaline water actually is, what changing the pH of water does and does not do, and why we think it is a marketing category rather than a water problem. We do not sell an alkaline machine, and we would rather explain why than pretend we do.

What alkaline water actually is

pH is a scale describing how acidic or alkaline something is. Seven is neutral, below is acidic, above is alkaline, and the scale is logarithmic, so each step of one is a tenfold change. Lemon juice sits near two, black coffee near five, tap water usually just above seven.

Alkaline water is simply water pushed up that scale, usually to somewhere between eight and ten. That is the whole of the definition. It is not a filtration standard, it is not a purity measure, and it is not a category any water regulator recognises as meaning anything about quality.

This is the part that gets skipped in the showroom, so it is worth stating plainly. Two glasses of water at exactly the same pH can be completely different from one another. One might be clean, filtered and free of chlorine. The other might be full of sediment and taste of a swimming pool. The pH number does not distinguish between them, because pH measures one narrow property and says nothing at all about what is dissolved or suspended in the water.

The two ways it is made

Electrolysis, in an ioniser

An ioniser passes water over charged plates and splits the stream in two. Dissolved minerals carrying an electrical charge — calcium and magnesium on one side, chloride and sulphate on the other — are drawn towards opposite plates. One outlet gives the alkaline stream you are meant to drink; the other gives an acidic stream that goes down the drain or is recommended for cleaning.

The point to hold on to is that an ioniser does not create anything. It separates what is already in the water, so its output depends entirely on what it was given to work with.

Adding minerals back in

The cheaper approach, and by far the more common one on systems sold here, is a cartridge fitted after the filtration stages that adds alkaline material to the water as it passes through. It raises the pH until the media is used up, at which point the effect fades and the cartridge needs replacing like any other.

What raising the pH does, and what it does not

Raising the pH changes one measurable property of the water. It does not remove chlorine, sediment, rust from an old riser, or anything that came out of a building’s storage tank. It does not filter. On a system that already has proper carbon and sediment stages, the alkaline cartridge at the end is doing none of the work that made the water better — it is adjusting a number after the fact.

There is a further technical point the marketing tends to leave out. pH and alkalinity are not the same thing, though the words sound alike. Alkalinity is buffering capacity — the water’s ability to resist a change in pH when something is added to it. It is entirely possible to produce water with a high pH reading and almost no buffering capacity behind it, and that water’s pH will not survive contact with much of anything: it drifts back down as it stands in the glass, and it is overwhelmed instantly by anything acidic it meets.

So the impressive reading on the display describes the water at the moment it leaves the machine, under ideal conditions, and not necessarily what you drink.

The claims, and why we will not repeat them

Alkaline water is sold on a long list of promises about what it will do for the person drinking it — energy, ageing, acidity, recovery, general wellbeing — usually alongside a figure called oxidation-reduction potential, presented as though it settled the argument.

Those claims are not supported by good evidence, and they are not claims we will make, repeat or endorse. We sell water filters. We are not a medical authority and we have no business making statements about anyone’s health, in either direction. If a health question genuinely matters to you, it belongs with a doctor and not with a water company or a salesperson working on commission.

What we would say is this: when someone tells you a machine will do something to your body, ask for the evidence and notice what happens next. A confident answer with no source behind it is the single most reliable warning sign in this industry.

Why the idea sits particularly awkwardly in the UAE

Here is where it gets specific to this country, and this is the part almost nobody covers.

All UAE tap water starts as seawater. It is desalinated, which strips out the dissolved content almost completely at the plant, and then a small, controlled amount of mineral content is added back before the water is sent out. That remineralisation is not done for the drinker’s benefit — it is done because water with nothing dissolved in it is chemically aggressive and would attack the metal in the distribution pipes. Two things follow. The first is that treated supply here is already kept on the mildly alkaline side of neutral, deliberately, for that same pipe-protection reason. A customer being sold alkalinity is often being sold something the water largely already has.

The second is more awkward for the ioniser. An ioniser works by separating dissolved charged minerals, so it needs a decent quantity of them to work with. Water in Dubai and Abu Dhabi is almost entirely desalinated and carries a light dissolved load by design. Put an ioniser on it and there is not a great deal there to separate. Put an ioniser after a reverse osmosis system, which has removed nearly all of it, and there is essentially nothing.

Which is why systems sold on this basis very often include a remineralisation cartridge ahead of the ionising stage. Read that sequence back slowly. The water is stripped, then minerals are added, then the machine separates the minerals that were just added. It is a closed loop that exists so the display can show a number.

What actually matters in the water here

If pH is not the useful question, the fair thing is to say what is.

Chlorine

Chlorine is added to the supply on purpose and kept in it all the way to your tap, because the journey from the plant to a building in a hot climate is long and the water has to stay protected. It is also the single biggest reason UAE tap water tastes and smells the way it does. What happened after the water left the network

The utility’s responsibility ends at the building. After that the water sits in a storage tank, in a hot country, and travels through that building’s own pipework. Tank condition, tank cleaning and the age of the plumbing vary enormously between one address and the next, and that variation is far more consequential than any pH reading.

Which emirate you are in

Dubai and Abu Dhabi run overwhelmingly on desalinated supply, so there is little dissolved in the water and carbon plus a fine filter handles most of what people complain about. Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain blend in groundwater, which carries a genuine dissolved load and behaves quite differently in the kettle. That is a real difference worth choosing a system around.

Does it taste different?

Some people say it does, and we are not going to tell anyone they are imagining it. Water at a higher pH is often described as tasting smoother or slightly rounder, and mineral content of any kind affects flavour. Taste is a legitimate reason to prefer one water to another, and it is the one honest argument in favour of the category.

It is a preference, though, and not a quality grade — and it does not justify the price gap between an alkaline machine and a good filtration system.

If you are still considering one

Ask three questions. What does this remove, stage by stage, and how does that differ from the same system without the alkaline stage? What does the alkaline component cost to replace, and how often? And what evidence supports the health claim just made to me?

Be sceptical of on-the-spot demonstrations. The trick that turns a glass of tap water brown while the machine’s water stays clear demonstrates electrolysis and dissolved iron from the electrodes, not contamination. A handheld meter reading is not an analysis either — it reports one number and cannot tell you what that number is made of, as we set out in what a TDS meter really tells you. Genuine analysis means a sample sent to an accredited laboratory, which is not something anybody can do at your kitchen tap, ourselves included.

Our position, stated plainly

We do not sell an alkaline machine, and that is a choice rather than a gap in the range. We would rather put a customer’s money into the stages that change what is actually in the water — sediment, carbon, and where the local supply justifies it, a fine membrane — than into a stage that adjusts a number on a display.
