Two kitchens forty minutes apart on the same motorway can be sold the same machine on the same reasoning. In one of them that reasoning is sound. In the other it is a script written for a different situation and never checked against the one it is being read in.
The difference is where the water came from before it reached the building. It varies across the UAE more than most residents realise, and it is the single most useful thing to understand before spending money on filtration — partly because it changes which machine is right, and partly because in a good number of homes it means the cheaper machine is right.
The country does not have one water supply
It is easy to talk about “UAE tap water” as though it were a single thing. It is not. Each emirate has its own utility, its own sources and its own mix, and that mix has shifted over the years as new plants have come online.
The broad picture is that Dubai and Abu Dhabi run overwhelmingly on desalinated seawater. In Dubai the figure is around 98.8%, with the small remainder drawn from groundwater wells held largely as strategic reserve. Further north and east, the picture is more mixed. Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain have all historically drawn a more meaningful share from groundwater alongside desalinated supply, in proportions that vary by emirate, by area within an emirate, and by year.
We are deliberately not putting a percentage on that second group. The honest position is that the balance moves, the utility supplying your address is the authority on it, and we would rather say we do not know than publish a number that sounds precise and is not.
What desalination leaves behind
Desalinated water starts as seawater and is stripped almost completely. Whether the plant does it by heating the water and condensing the vapour, or by forcing it against a membrane under pressure, the outcome is the same: nearly everything dissolved is taken out, and what emerges is close to pure water.
That creates a practical problem. Very pure water is slightly acidic and chemically aggressive, and it would attack the pipes it has to travel through on the way to your building. So a controlled amount of mineral content and alkalinity is deliberately added back during post-treatment — not for your benefit, but for the pipework’s. The water is being made stable enough to distribute.
The consequence matters more than it sounds: in a home supplied this way there is no heavy dissolved load left at the tap. It was removed at the plant, and the modest amount put back afterwards was measured in deliberately. There is very little there for a machine designed to strip dissolved content to strip.
This is also why one popular argument collapses here. You will hear that a filter “keeps the healthy minerals in your water”, or the mirror image, that reverse osmosis “strips your water of essential minerals”. Both were written for countries where tap water comes from springs and aquifers carrying calcium and magnesium picked up from rock. That is not this water, and we have set out how the supply actually gets here in more detail.
So what is a desalinated-supply household actually dealing with?
Two things, and neither of them is the source.
The first is chlorine. It is added on purpose, because a disinfectant residual is what keeps the water safe across a long journey from the plant to your building, and taking it out at source would cause a far worse problem than it solves. But human noses detect chlorine well below any level of concern, which is why so many people describe their tap as tasting of a swimming pool and quietly drink less water than they should.
The second is the journey itself. The utility is responsible up to the meter. Past that it is the building’s own pipework, of unknown age, and then in most cases a storage tank that the water sits in until somebody opens a tap. Cleaning that tank is the building owner’s or facility manager’s job — Dubai Municipality expects potable water storage tanks to be cleaned and disinfected by a Municipality-approved contractor at least twice a year — and most residents have no idea when theirs was last opened.
Chlorine is a job for activated carbon. The journey is a job for a fine physical barrier at the point of use. Neither of those requires the most expensive machine in the range, and saying so costs us money.
Where groundwater changes the question
Groundwater behaves differently, because it has spent time in contact with rock. Water moving slowly through the ground dissolves what it passes — carbonates, sulphates, chlorides, whatever the local geology holds — and it arrives at the surface carrying that load. It was never taken out at a plant, because there was no stripping stage to take it out.
That load is the reason reverse osmosis exists. A reverse osmosis membrane is the finest barrier available in a domestic machine: water is pushed against it under pressure and passes through, while dissolved solids are rejected and carried away to the drain. It is the one technology on the shelf that deals properly with a genuinely high dissolved content, and where that content is genuinely there, nothing else does the same job.
It also has real costs, which anyone recommending it ought to tell you about at the same time. It needs pressure, it is slower than a carbon system, it usually wants a storage tank under the sink, and it sends some water to the drain — we have covered how much and why separately. Those costs are worth paying against a real dissolved load. They are worth considerably less against water that had its dissolved load removed at the plant before it ever set off.
Why this is a question and not an answer
Put those two halves together and the shape of the thing is clear enough. A supply that is overwhelmingly desalinated has already had the reverse osmosis done to it, at industrial scale, before distribution. A supply with a real groundwater share has not. Those are different starting points, and they do not lead to the same machine.
What we will not do is turn that into a rule with an emirate name attached, because it does not survive contact with reality. Supplies are blended. Areas within one emirate differ. A building on a private well is a different case again from the same building on mains. Two households on the same street can have different pipework and a tank in wildly different condition.
Which is why the first question any competent company should ask you is where the property is and what it is connected to — and if you are asked to choose a machine before anyone has asked you that, you are not being advised, you are being sold to. It is not a hard question. It takes one sentence. The reason it often goes unasked is that the answer sometimes points at the cheaper product.
What we cannot tell you
One more thing, said plainly because the industry here is bad about it. WaterClub sells and installs filtration. We are not a laboratory, and we cannot tell you what is in the water at your particular tap. Nobody can, from a doorstep, with a handheld gadget or a jar and a pair of electrodes. If you want to know what is in your water, that is a job for an accredited testing laboratory, and it is a perfectly reasonable thing to commission.
What we can do is tell you honestly what each technology addresses, ask enough questions about your home to narrow it down, and be straightforward when the answer is the less expensive option. Sometimes the answer is that a household needs nothing at all beyond what it already has, and that is a fine outcome too.

One last thing worth knowing before you shop, because it catches people out every summer: no filter of any kind cools water. Filtration and cooling are unrelated functions, and a standard under-sink or counter-top system delivers water at tap temperature, which in an Emirates August is warm. Cold water needs a machine with a chiller in it, whichever emirate you are in.
