A TDS pen costs about the same as a takeaway coffee, arrives in two days, and gives you a number in four seconds. That number then gets used to justify buying a system, rejecting a system, panicking about a tap, or reassuring somebody about a bottle. It is not capable of doing any of those things.

This is what the reading actually measures, the one job it is genuinely good at, and the doorstep demonstration you should walk out on.

What the number is

TDS stands for total dissolved solids: everything dissolved in the water that is not water. Minerals, salts, some metals, and whatever else has gone into solution.

The pen does not measure any of that. It measures how well the water conducts electricity, then multiplies by a conversion factor to estimate a solids figure in parts per million. Dissolved substances that carry an electrical charge make water more conductive; more of them, more conductivity, higher reading.

That is the whole mechanism, and it explains every limitation that follows. The pen produces one number from one property, and cannot tell you what is producing it.

Why a low number is not a safety certificate

This is the mistake that matters most, because it runs the wrong way from the one people worry about.

Plenty of things you would not want in water either do not conduct electricity or are present in quantities far too small to move a conductivity reading. Bacteria are not dissolved solids. Nor are most organic compounds. Chlorine at supply levels, which is the single most common reason people dislike the taste of their tap water, barely registers.

So a low reading tells you the water is low in dissolved conductive material. It does not tell you the water is clean, and it certainly does not tell you it is safe. Distilled water reads close to zero and would be a poor thing to build a diet around.

Why a high number is not a danger reading

The reverse is just as wrong. The pen cannot distinguish harmless dissolved minerals from anything else, because to a conductivity meter they all look the same.

Bottled mineral water is the clearest example. Many well-known mineral waters read high — that is the point of them, and it is printed on the label as a selling feature. Nobody calls a mineral water contaminated because it has a lot dissolved in it.

Here, there is a further twist worth understanding. UAE tap water is desalinated seawater, and desalination strips out essentially everything at the plant. Water that pure is slightly acidic and would corrode the pipes it travels through, so a controlled amount of mineral content and alkalinity is deliberately added back afterwards to make it stable for distribution. The doorstep trick

You may have seen this one, at home or at a mall stand. It deserves to be described in full, because it is still working on people.

A salesperson fills two glasses — your tap water in one, their filtered water in the other. Into each goes a device with two metal rods, plugged in. Within a minute your glass is brown, murky and unpleasant, sometimes with a rusty scum on top. Theirs stays clear. The conclusion offered is that everything you can see was already in your water, and that they have just made it visible.

It was not in your water. It came out of the rod.

The device is an electrolysis unit. One of the electrodes is iron. Pass a current through water and that electrode corrodes, releasing iron compounds that promptly turn a rusty orange-brown and cloud the glass. The brown material is the electrode dissolving into the water in front of you.

The reason the two glasses differ is the giveaway, and it is the same physics as the TDS pen. Water with more dissolved conductive material carries more current, so the electrode corrodes faster and the water goes brown quickly. Water with very little dissolved in it barely conducts, so almost nothing happens and the glass stays clear. The demonstration is not showing you contamination. It is showing you conductivity, dressed up.

You can prove it in your own kitchen at no cost: run the same test on a bottle of expensive mineral water. It goes brown too, often faster than tap water, because it has more dissolved in it. So does a glass of water with a pinch of salt stirred in.

Our advice is blunt. If somebody performs this demonstration in your home, end the appointment. Not because the equipment they are selling is necessarily bad, but because they have chosen to open with something they either know is misleading or have never bothered to check. Neither is a person to buy plumbing from.

What a TDS reading is genuinely useful for

Having said all that, the pen is not worthless. It does one job well, and one job usefully.

Deciding whether reverse osmosis is the right technology

This is the real use. A TDS reading is a rough proxy for how much dissolved material is in your supply, and how much dissolved material is in your supply is the single question that determines whether reverse osmosis is the right answer for you.

Reverse osmosis pushes water through a membrane fine enough to hold back dissolved substances. It is the correct tool when there is a genuine dissolved load to remove. It costs more to buy, more to run, and it sends some water to drain — so using it where there is nothing much to remove means paying for a capability you are not getting the benefit of.

Which is why the reading differs meaningfully across this country, and why the honest recommendation differs with it.

  • Dubai and Abu Dhabi are supplied overwhelmingly with desalinated seawater. The dissolved load was already dealt with at the plant, and readings reflect that. The complaint people actually have here is taste, smell and chlorine, plus whatever the building’s tank and pipework added on the way up — which is a job for good activated carbon and a fine physical barrier, not a membrane.
  • Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain have more groundwater in the supply. Groundwater carries a real dissolved load that never went through a desalination plant, and readings there are meaningfully higher. That is what reverse osmosis was built for, and the case for it is much stronger.

Reverse osmosis remains available anywhere, for anyone who simply wants the widest barrier and accepts the running cost. That is a preference, and a perfectly legitimate one. Watching one tap over time

The second use is comparative rather than absolute. If you own a reverse osmosis system, taking a reading from the filtered tap every few months tells you something real: the membrane is meant to hold back most of the dissolved load, so if that reading climbs steadily towards the reading on your mains tap, the membrane is coming to the end of its life.

That is a legitimate use of a cheap pen — not because the number means anything on its own, but because the change in it does. It does not replace changing filters on schedule, which happens twice a year regardless.

We do not measure your water, and neither should anyone selling you equipment

To be completely clear about where we stand: WaterClub is not a laboratory. We do not test your water, we do not measure it, we do not assess it, and we will not turn up with a meter and tell you what is in your supply. We sell and install filtration and we maintain it.

Anything that needs real measurement — a suspected specific contaminant, a commercial requirement, a dispute with a landlord or a developer — is a job for an accredited testing laboratory. They use validated methods, they hold accreditation for the tests they report, and crucially they have nothing to sell you afterwards. That last part is the whole point.

A company offering to measure your water for free while quoting you for equipment is doing something other than measuring. The result is decided before the visit starts. That is true whether the instrument is a colour-change kit, an electrolysis device or a TDS pen, and it is true even when the equipment being sold is perfectly good.

A site visit is a different thing and worth having for a villa — somebody looking at the tank, the plumbing, the space available and how the household uses water. That is a survey of your property, not a test of your water, and the difference is not a technicality.

The short version

A TDS pen measures electrical conductivity and estimates one number from it. It cannot separate harmless dissolved minerals from anything else, so a low reading proves nothing about safety and a high reading proves nothing about danger. The brown-water electrolysis demonstration is iron coming off the electrode and does the same thing in bottled mineral water; treat it as a reason to end the conversation.

What the number is good for is the technology question — roughly how much dissolved material your supply carries, and therefore whether reverse osmosis is solving a problem you actually have. In Dubai and Abu Dhabi it usually is not. In the northern emirates it often is.
