Lift the lid of a kettle that has been in a UAE kitchen for a year and you will find a chalky crust on the element. The shower screen goes cloudy within days of being cleaned. The coffee machine that used to pull a shot in twenty-five seconds now takes thirty-five and makes an unhappy noise doing it. Taps develop a white ring, and a shower head starts spraying at an angle it was never designed to.
All of it is the same thing, and there is a fair amount of nonsense written about what to do. Here is the plain version, including the parts where the answer is “a filter will not help with that”.
What limescale actually is
Water carries dissolved minerals — mostly calcium and magnesium compounds. When water evaporates or is heated, those minerals do not go anywhere. They come out of solution and stay behind on whatever surface the water was touching. That deposit is limescale, and water carrying more of those minerals is what people mean by “hard” water.
That is the whole mechanism, and it explains where you find it. Scale appears where water is heated, evaporates, or sits and dries — kettles, boilers, heating elements, shower screens, tap spouts, the rim of a sink. It does not appear in your cold pipework in any comparable way, because nothing there is driving the water off.
To be clear about one thing before it becomes a claim: limescale is a plumbing and appliance problem, not a health one. We are not going to dress it up as anything else, and you should be wary of anyone who does.
Why it happens here, given where the water comes from
This part surprises people, because UAE tap water is desalinated seawater and desalination removes essentially everything, minerals included, at the plant. If the water arriving were what leaves the membranes, there would be almost nothing to leave a deposit.
But that is not what arrives. Pure desalinated water is slightly acidic and would corrode the pipes it travels through, so a controlled amount of mineral content and alkalinity is added back during post-treatment purely to make the water chemically stable for distribution. On top of that, the supply in some places is blended with groundwater, and hardness varies noticeably between emirates and sometimes between buildings on the same supply. Then there is the climate, which does more work here than the chemistry. Evaporation is relentless — a shower screen dries in minutes, a sink dries between uses, and every one of those cycles leaves behind whatever was dissolved in the drops. Water sitting in a hot storage tank arrives at the appliance already warm.
Which is why people who moved here from a soft-water region are often baffled by their kettle. It is not that the water is dramatically hard. It is that the conditions are exceptionally good at concentrating whatever is in it.
Where it costs you money
Scale on a shower screen is an aesthetic annoyance. Scale on a heating element is an expense.
A layer of limescale on an element acts as insulation between the element and the water. The element therefore has to run hotter and longer to deliver the same heat, which means more energy for the same cup of tea, and — more importantly — it means the element itself is running at a higher temperature than it was designed for. Heating elements that spend their lives overheating fail sooner. That is the mechanism behind almost every scale-related appliance death.
The pattern worth noticing is which appliances suffer. A kettle is cheap and easy to descale. The machines that suffer most are the expensive ones: espresso machines, dishwashers and washing machines with elements you cannot see, water heaters, steam ovens. In an espresso machine there is a second problem on top of the element — the internal passages are narrow by design, and scale narrowing them further changes the flow rate, which changes the extraction, which is why the coffee goes off before the machine does.
None of that is sudden. It is slow, it is invisible, and it is why people replace appliances believing they simply do not last.
What a point-of-use filter does about scale, and what it does not
This is the section most of the industry skips, so we will be specific.
A standard drinking filter does not soften water. Sediment, carbon and ultrafiltration stages are designed to remove chlorine, particles, sediment and — depending on the technology — a good deal else. They are not designed to remove dissolved calcium and magnesium, and by and large they do not. If someone tells you a carbon filter will stop your kettle scaling, they are wrong.
Reverse osmosis is different. An RO membrane does remove dissolved minerals, which is exactly why RO water leaves far less deposit behind. Fill a kettle from an RO tap and you will see the difference over a few months.
But either way, it only affects that one tap. A point-of-use system treats the water you draw from it and nothing else. That covers the kettle and the coffee machine, if you get into the habit of filling both from the filtered tap rather than the mixer — which is the single most cost-effective thing in this article, because it protects the two appliances most likely to be damaged, and it costs nothing but a change of habit.
What it does not cover is everything the mains still feeds: the shower, the dishwasher, the washing machine, the water heater, the bathroom taps, the outside tap. Those are on the building’s supply and a kitchen filter has no reach at all into them. Anybody implying otherwise is selling you a kitchen product against a whole-property problem.
One related note, since it comes up in the same conversation: a shower filter deals with chlorine, not hardness. It is a worthwhile thing for other reasons, but it will not stop the screen going cloudy.
Treating the whole property
If scale across the whole house is the problem you actually want solved, the treatment has to happen where the water enters the property, not at the kitchen sink. That normally means a softener, sized and configured for the property, sitting on the incoming supply — often alongside filtration, depending on what the tank and the plumbing look like.
Two honest caveats.
In an apartment, this is usually not available to you. You do not control the incoming supply to the building, and the riser feeding your unit is not yours to modify. The realistic scope for a tenant or apartment owner is point-of-use at the kitchen, plus a shower filter, plus descaling. That is not a sales answer, it is just the shape of the building.
In a villa, we will not quote you a price for this over the phone or on a website, ever. A whole-property system depends on the tank, the existing plumbing, where there is space to put equipment, and what you actually want out of it. Those differ enough between two villas on the same street that any number given in advance would be invented. We look at it first and quote afterwards, which is what our villa site visit is for. During that visit we look at the tank, the plumbing, the space and how the household uses water — we are not a laboratory and we do not test or measure what is in your water, which is a job for an accredited lab.
What actually helps, in order
- Descale the appliances you already own, on a schedule. This is the highest-return action and it costs almost nothing. Kettles respond to citric acid or white vinegar. For a coffee machine, use the product and interval in the manual rather than a household remedy — the manufacturer specifies both for a reason, and coffee machines are the appliance most often ruined by improvisation.
- Fill the kettle and the coffee machine from the filtered tap, and from an RO tap if you have one. Free, and it targets exactly the appliances most at risk.
- Wipe the shower screen after use. Deeply boring, completely effective. The deposit forms when the drops dry, so removing the drops removes the problem.
- Clean the shower head and tap aerators. Both unscrew, and a few hours in a descaling solution restores a spray pattern people assume is a broken fitting.
- For a villa, treat at the inlet — after somebody has actually looked at the property.
One thing we would not spend money on: magnetic and electronic “descalers” that clip onto a pipe and claim to change how the minerals behave without removing them. Independent evidence for these is mixed at best. We do not sell them.
The summary
Scale is dissolved minerals left behind when water evaporates or is heated, and the climate here is unusually good at making that happen. It damages heating elements by insulating them, and the appliances it costs you most are the expensive ones. A kitchen filter helps with the water you draw from that tap, and reverse osmosis helps considerably more — but neither touches the shower, the washing machine or the water heater. Whole-property treatment is a villa answer, quoted after a site visit and never before.
